Webinar organised on Ocean Systems and Future Technology

Dr R Venkatesan, Scientist and Programme Director, OOS, National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai provided useful insights on the emerging technologies such as ocean sampling networks, underwater vehicles, underwater human robot interaction and ultra-long endurance systems in the webinar on ‘Autonomous Ocean Systems-Emerging and Future Technology’ of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

He touched upon cutting edge topics such as Autonomous Oceanographic Sampling Network, involving networked systems comprising underwater vehicles, docking and charging stations, underwater and satellite communications, and adaptive mission planning; Haptic Fine Scale Manipulation using lighter and more flexible manipulators mounted on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Underwater Internet of Things (IoT) in factory-based automation among other topics.

Dr Venkatesan further discussed technologies and design aspects of various autonomous underwater systems like ROVs, AUVs and Buoys.

Describing benefits of Marine Technology Society, USA membership; he urged faculty members and students to get associated with it.

In the welcome address, Dr M Muzammil (Chairman, Department of Mechanical Engineering) pondered over the technological advances needed for the current generation of AUVs to become truly ubiquitous in the world’s oceans.

Moderating the webinar, Prof Saleem Anwar Khan highlighted the need for a robust academia-industry collaboration to achieve this vision of open ocean infrastructure.

The webinar was held in collaboration of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and MTS AUV-ZHCET student section.

Dr Abdullah Yousuf Usmani extended the vote of thanks.

Faculties and students from IITs, AMU and other institutions participated in the programme.
