International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed at AMU

Saturday, December 04, 2021

“Socio-economic and legal barriers need to be dismantled and attitudes need to change for actively involving persons with disabilities in the mainstream”, said Prof Tariq Mansoor, Vice-Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) while addressing an online programme organised by the Disability Unit of AMU to observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Prof Mansoor said it is unfortunate that people with disabilities are one of the most excluded groups in our society and they are hard hit when Covid-19 type crises develop. He said AMU is committed to safeguarding the rights of differently-abled people and helping in having an inclusive society.

Mr Faiz Ahmed Kidwai (IAS) delineated various policy issues, governmental programmes and schemes, and national and international charters for the welfare of persons with disabilities.

Mr Sajid Zia Khan (Corporate speaker and Vice President, Strategy & Development, CRH) highlighted the importance of the Day and urged to reduce inequalities for the realization of human rights of persons with disabilities.

Dr Farrukh Hafeez delivered the welcome address while Dr Shagufta Niyaz (Women’s College, AMU) proposed the vote of thanks.

On the occasion, headphones and pen drives were distributed among the students. The programme was conducted by Mr Ghayasuddin.
