AMU mourns the demise of Dr. Jawaid Akhtar
The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), deeply mourned the sad demise of Dr Jawaid Akhtar, Associate Professor, Centre of Advanced Study (CAS), Department of History who passed away, battling cancer.
"I express my earnest commiseration to the bereaved family of Dr Jawaid. May the love that surrounds them, bring comfort and peace. Dr Javed was a conscientious teacher and promising scholar," said Professor Tariq Mansoor, Vice Chancellor in his condolence message.
Extending condolences on the demise, Professor Ishrat Alam, Chairman, CAS, said it was a great personal loss and the members of the Aligarh Society of History and Archaeology are heartbroken at the irreplaceable loss of their beloved colleague.
Dr Jawaid was working as an Associate Professor since 2006. He joined his services at the CAS, Department of History as a Senior Research Assistant (SRA) in 1989 and as a lecturer in 1991. He published over 20 research papers for peer-reviewed journals and guided four Ph.D and two MPhil research scholars.
Dr Jawaid wrote his M.Phil dissertation on the Commerce of Ahmedabad during the Seventeenth Century and Ph.D thesis on the Merchants of Gujarat (1572-1750).
He was awarded the Netherlands Government Scholarship for learning the Dutch Language, and for collecting source material for Ph.D from archives and libraries in the Netherlands.
Dr Jawaid taught courses such as 'Capitalism, Colonialism and Socialism Societies', 'Historical Method', 'Mughal Economy', 'Modern World', 'Economy of India (1200-1550),' and 'Gujarat (1500-1750)' to the postgraduate students. He also instructed papers of 'History of England', 'Medieval India' and 'History of Modern World,' to the undergraduate students.
The deceased is survived by a son and two daughters.
